Synopsis:
Two FBI officers, John Green and George Stanhope confer urgently by phone following an assassination at a climate change protest at the Lincoln Memorial. As the first details emerge, they begin to suspect that this was no lone-wolf attack — and that the assassination may be the beginning of something much larger.
“Hi John. I know you’re there on the ground. Just give me your initial reaction off the top of your head. What do you think has occurred out there on the Mall.”
“Well George, firstly, looking at the scene, I hope we can agree, here and now, this ain’t no lone-wolf operation. Behind the simplicity of this scene this was clearly an expertly and well planned, assassination. Basically, George, this was a public execution. Unless you tell me different, I’m assuming we had no wind or word of this from anywhere; you’d have briefed me, right?”
George agreed. Then he asked John to continue.
“OK. Well, secondly, I would say it was a political attack, of course. Could be Climate Terrorists? But do we have proscribed groups of those? I guess, it could have been a racial attack. Whichever way I would be badging this as far right, ‘home grown terrorism’ at this stage.”
“Lastly, George, on the shooting itself, there had to be two simultaneous shooters involved. They took the horse and rider down at virtually the same instant. The gunfire sounded like one shot. Could have just taken the shaman, couldn’t they? My guess though, is they’d planned to the destroy the whole image and message of indigenous leadership. Could even call it a practical decapitation of the International Festival of the Earths Strategic aims?”
“If you close your eyes George, then think back to the silence before the shooting, you can almost hear one of the two shooters calmly counting in the trigger pulls together, ‘one, two, three – squeeze!”
George agreed, then chuckled down the phone.
“John, that’s very graphic. What I’ve always admired about you, John, is you strip a process down to its most basic, separate moving parts.”
“George, we have to face facts, there could be other assassinations in the planning. This is your bag though, George, ‘Terrorism’. Yeah?”
