What’s a moment when you realized you were officially an adult?
I realised I was an adult at the age of 17, sitting down late at night with my mother, telling her I had arranged to leave home in a few months time. I was anxious about telling her because I had made this decision.
I remember she went to bed, and my feeling relieved it was over.
Half an hour later my mother, who loved me dearly, came down in floods of tears, she felt I wasn’t ready. The very next thing that told me I was an adult was that she negotiated with me to extend my plans. I responded and gave her a timeframe I had already agreed with a friend and a landlord to move into my first step into freedom.
I am 75 now. I never looked back from that moment and pledged to myself and my friends I would never return to live with my parents again.
