A gift to my father.

What’s one thing you own that holds deep sentimental value?

In his work my father was a stained glass craftsman, managing a team of people who repaired ancient church windows, and sometimes working with others to create new ones. He is no longer with us.

When he died I ended up with a large cardboard box to rummage through, trying to understand his wishes. On one small piece of paper he expressed the wish that I inherit an artwork he had been given by a well known stained glass artist, Rosemary Rutherford. (You can search her online)

This art work is gift from an artist to my father as a craftsman. My father worked very closely with her, to help her translate a brand new church window in St Mary’s Church, Boxford in Suffolk, England. The window represents the Transfiguration of Christ. This window was his pride and joy; he loved working with Rosemary Rutherford. His own name as the craftsman, however, is nowhere to be seen in the words written about it.

I have the honour of inheriting this gift of thanks between the two creators. Rosemary Rutherford personally acknowledged my father’s contribution.

The picture she gave him is of the Annunciation of Christ by the Angel Gabriel.
