The Doctrine of Discovery began as a few lines of medieval theology, and ended as a blueprint for empire. In its simplest form it held that land not occupied by Christians could be claimed by those who arrived to “discover” it. What sounds like an old argument about maps and flags was, in practice, a licence — one that moved from the language of faith into the language of law, and from there into the daily machinery of nations. A ‘buried facts’ doctrine is legal disclosure rule, which does not support the murky legal practice of hiding the truth in fine print, appendices and footnotes.
That is the part I keep returning to. A doctrine does not stay in the century that wrote it. It is absorbed into statutes, into courts, into the assumptions that officials carry to work without ever naming them. Long after the original words are forgotten, the structure they built keeps standing. To dig at the foundations of modern civilisation is, again and again, to find this same stone near the bottom.
This is why the blog is called The Buried Doctrine. It is the spade that relentlessly digs for nuggets of truth.The crimes at the centre of trilogy of The Corleone Christ are not invented out of nothing; they grow from a logic that was planted centuries ago and was never fully uprooted. Fiction gives me the freedom follow that logic into rooms history rarely lets any of us enter — the moment a decision is made, silence and darkness swallow it whole; the cost is carried by people who were never asked and never told.
I do not write this to settle the question. I write it to keep the door open. The point of an excavation is not to admire the artefact but to understand what it was used for, and whether we are still using it. That work continues here, one entry at a time.
